How can I tell if I have pseudogynecomastia or gynecomastia?
To differentiate between pseudogynecomastia and gynecomastia, a physical examination by a healthcare professional is essential. Gynecomastia involves enlargement of the glandular tissue, which feels different from the fatty tissue of pseudogynecomastia. In some cases, imaging tests like ultrasound or mammography might be used to distinguish between the two.
Can pseudogynecomastia go away on its own?
Pseudogynecomastia may improve or resolve with weight loss. Since it’s caused by excess fatty tissue, lifestyle changes like diet and exercise that lead to overall weight reduction can significantly reduce the appearance of enlarged breasts. However, in cases where there’s significant skin laxity or stubborn fat deposits, medical or surgical interventions may be necessary.
Are there any non-surgical treatments effective for pseudogynecomastia?
Non-surgical approaches mainly focus on weight management and lifestyle modifications. Dietary changes and regular exercise are the most effective non-surgical treatments. In some cases, medications to address related health issues or hormonal imbalances can also be part of the treatment plan. Compression garments can temporarily minimize the appearance but do not treat the underlying condition.
